Self Promotion Piece
With the thought of potential employers, I created a piece that could be distributed easily, while providing an insight into my design process, and personal life.
The wall
It all begins with a similar process.
For me, this piece speaks very strongly about how I tackle challenges thrown at me in both, design and rock climbing. Facing the wall, you encounter many obstacles. Whether they are literal or metaphorical, there is lots of planning and critical decision making in order to produce innovative and successful solutions.
In climbing, certain challenges can include different grips, balance, or just plain trial and error until muscle memory kicks in. This could take several tries, or even days to accomplish consistently, but until you reach the top, there’s always this “itch” of how to tackle the problem from a new perspective.
Design process
While climbing can be easy to visualize a path, the design process sometimes takes experience to clearly see the potential at hand.
After years of new problems and ideas, I wanted to create a system that would allow for me to visually maintain the clarity needed to obtain such goals. It started just like any other project, with an outline based on a surge of random thoughts and connections.
I began to think of short phrases that I would tell myself while working on my design projects. These phrases became core values that I would revisit whenever I encountered “a wall” in the process.
Finalizing the concept of the self-promotional piece, I tied together both ideas and came up with a “build your own” climbing wall using magnetic pieces. The front face features my design process, while all the blank surrounding sides are available for employers to visualize their own path to success by using the pieces found in the drawer.
